Terminal Layout

For the operation of a deep-sea container terminal at Teesport various alternative terminal layouts have been considered.

The overall performance of the terminal has been assessed using PSPORT CTS terminal simulation software, together with a terminal area of approximately 50Ha.

Introduction to Flyby simulation
The findings of the simulation are that a quay length of 1000m will support a terminal throughput of 1.5 million TEU per annum assuming RTG operation, and 1.8-2.0 million TEU per annum assuming RMG operation. Simulation of the terminal throughput has shown that for RTG and RMG operation, capacity is primarily constrained by the length of the quay.

RTG operation most closely achieves PD Teesport’s target throughput of 1.5 million TEU on the defined terminal area based upon the following parameters:

  • TEU factor of 1.7 (i.e. ratio of TEU to containers: 70% are 40’ containers and 30% are 20’ containers)

  • 50% are Imports and 50% are Exports

  • 10% of Imports are empty containers and 40% of Exports are empty containers

  • 5% of containers are Reefers

  • 1% of containers are Hazardous.

  • Dwell times are 5 days average and 10 days maximum

  • Monthly seasonal peaking factor is 1.2 (i.e. greatest monthly throughput is 20% greater than average monthly throughput)

  • Modal split of 10% transhipment : 70% road : 20% rail
